Plant City Strawberries: Cut some up now..

Strawberry enhanced treats...

One of the very best foodie things about living in Florida just has to be the super sweet strawberries we get down here when the rest of the nation is socked in with ice and snow and the memories of sweet strawberries are vague... Not here. Florida strawberries are in the stores now, and they are super. I worried about the very cold snap we had here--farmers had to harvest fast before they lost everything, and it seems to me they succeeded. I recently bought a couple of pints--I thought they looked maybe a little not-quite-right, but when I bit into them, after I'd cleaned and trimmed them and left them in the fridge ready to eat the next day--I had to double check to make sure no one had added sugar to them without me knowing. I am not exaggerating that. I have a favorite strawberry shortcake (you'll have to wait til our spring issue is out to see that) and I just love to slice strawberries into a green salad (just toss with greens and your favorite balsamic vinaigrette) OR check out the Florida Strawberry Growers Association for some other recipes: http://www.flastrawberry.com/recipes.aspx Whatever you do with them? They will be fabulous.

About This Blog

Barb Freda, food editor for JES Publishing, writes about ingredients, experiences in the kitchen and in restaurants (She has to eat out. A lot. It's her job). She also writes about cool things she finds for use in the kitchen—she is, in the end a bit of a gadget geek. She promises to blog about her own success and failures in the kitchen, too—those failures make for some good blog fodder, after all.
